Oceania Staff Agree on New Collective Contract

New Zealand’s largest provider of quality rest-home and hospital care for the elderly, Oceania Group, said today it is pleased that its union-affiliated staff had agreed to settle on a new collective employment agreement with the company.

Chief Executive Guy Eady said the company was heartened that staff had accepted as reasonable Oceania’s offer to pass on increases in government funding. The new collective agreement provides for a 3.22 percent increase in wages over two years until the end of June 2013.

The percentage reached is a culmination of the 1.72 percent funding for the last financial year and 1.5 percent for this financial year, given the agreement was settled already a year into its term.

“The last few months of industrial action have been difficult on the company and our staff. We are looking forward to putting this period behind us and focusing on more constructive ways to improve the aged-care sector,” Mr Eady said.

“An aged-care bubble over the next 20 years is going to be a challenge for all New Zealanders. Those of us working to provide quality, affordable rest-home care to elderly New Zealanders need to work together to meet the huge social and financial challenges that will occur as the country’s baby boomers reach retirement age.”

“Stable, adequate funding from the Government is necessary to ensure long-term investment is found to meet the growing demand expected over the next two decades and we are motivated to work in partnership with them to come up with a solution,” said Mr Eady
