Radar simulator and earthquake team among top winners of INNOVATE NZ Awards

A radar training simulator for the RNZAF’s upgraded Orion aircraft and the Christchurch earthquakes land damage assessment team are among projects taking top honours in the INNOVATE NZ Awards of Excellence 2012.

Judges selected five Gold Awards of Excellence winners from 38 finalist projects in the prestigious awards which are organized by the Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand and which recognise innovation in consulting engineering,

This year’s Gold Awards went to the Beca for the P-3K2 Orion Radar Trainer for the RNZAF at Whenuapai, Tonkin and Taylor for the massive task of assembling the 400-strong land damage assessment team, Holmes Fire for fire engineering at Britomart East/Westpac Charter House, Beca for HVAC Integrated Design for the Alan McDiarmid Building at Victoria University of Wellington and MWH New Zealand for its internationally acclaimed KiwiRAP Star Rating New Zealand Road Assessment Programme.

Convenor of Judges Allan Leahy said that there had been a very high standard of projects entered for the awards, many representing examples of world-leading applications of technology.

“To receive a Gold Award of Excellence, the highest of the three awards, the project must demonstrate real innovation – perhaps a new process that will establish the standard for years to come - and excellent customer service,” said Mr Leahy.
