BNZ has launched a brand new feature on its mobile banking app for iPhone that allows potential customers to join the bank from anywhere in New Zealand and, an Android version is just days away.

After downloading and opening the BNZ app the customer simply selects the ‘I want to join BNZ’ option and, with an internet connection and a camera on their phone they can be set up to bank in next to no time.

Head of BNZ Online Stephen Bowe says, “With this new feature on our banking app we’re looking to make banking even easier. With smartphones revolutionising the way we live our daily lives, BNZ aims to keep finding new avenues to make things simpler for our customers in an increasingly online world.”

BNZ has seen phenomenal growth in its mobile banking offering with total transactions now at $700m and mobile banking accounting for 20% of all logins to online banking channels. The bank is also seeing a growth of 10-15% over the last six months-measured by the number of unique logins each month.

To open a BNZ account via the new look app all you need to do is:

1. Take a photo of a passport or NZ drivers license
2. Take a photo of a recent bill or statement displaying name and address
3. Take a self portrait holding your ID
4. Take a photo of your signature or draw it on the screen
5. Press submit.

Once the application is complete and submitted the details will be passed to staff at BNZ’s Customer Contact Centre who will complete the account opening process.

The new feature is the latest development from BNZ’s mobile innovation team who helped to launch New Zealand’s first internet banking application designed specifically for the Android platform and also came up with Mobile NetGuard.

At launch customers will be able to access the MyMoney and Flexi Debit Visa products and the bank has plans to expand this offering in the near future.

People who apply for an account must be 18 years old and living in New Zealand.
