Best olive oil in Hawke’s Bay

Best olive oil in Hawke’s Bay
1/11/12

Last night at the Hawke’s Bay Olive Oil awards Telegraph Hill scooped ‘Best in Show’ for their ‘Leccino’ Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

This is a stunning result in what was a challenging growing year. These olives were harvested in Esk Valley in early June, and batch pressed. Andrew Taylor (the convenor) commented that this oil is a winner for its usability. It’s not an oil with huge pungency and pepperiness, usually demanded by the fervent olive oil eaters, but one which has wide appeal to all palates.

Leccino is an Italian variety that grows well in Hawke’s Bay. It loves the cool winters and traditional hot summers.

Two weeks ago Telegraph Hill won Champion table olives at the Easter Show in Auckland, and with this Champion Oil award on top it’s a fantastic result. The whole team is elated” says Geoff Crawford.

“It is the first time Telegraph Hill has won Best in Show for olive oil, with the same oil awarded best commercial oil, we have trophies on display in the tasting room at the Olivery”.

Interestingly in the nine years of awards, no company has won ‘Best in Show’ twice.

“It’s a feeling of elation and relief, a silver lining to a tough season” says Geoff Crawford. “Recognition for this award must go to our conscientious growers in Esk Valley for putting the work into growing great olives, and lovingly batch pressing the fruit.

“It’s a massively busy time at Telegraph Hill as we prepare for our Art in the Olive grove FAWC! Event on Saturday 10th November. So this Award is a fantastic lift for the entire team.”
