ANGEL INVESTORS HONOUR A CHAMPION

ICE Angels NZ Angel Investment Showcase 2012
The Auckland Showcase was a one-night event on 23rd October featuring presentations by 15 hand-picked start-ups to New Zealand’s largest gathering of angel investors, CEOs, and venture capitalists.

Those new angel investing were excited by what they saw commenting on the professionalism and ambition reflected by those presenting. New accelerator's backers put their time and money on the line, despite not knowing who they're investing in.

If you pitched the analogy of Johnny Appleseed vs Gordon Gecko to a roomful of Kiwi investors, you'd get a split vote and more probably a rabid aversion to being likened to either of them.

Rich dose of innovation will improve prosperity
Kiwi expat Sean Gourley, the founder of a $20 million high-tech business in California's Silicon Valley, believes Auckland is well placed to become an innovation hub.

"You have great talent coming out of the universities, creative, hardworking software developers on a par with anyone anywhere in the world," says Gourley, a former Rhodes scholar, originally from Christchurch.

These talented people would stay in Auckland and others including Americans would move here if they had the right (working) environment, said Gourley. The lifestyle, recreation, safety, cheaper living and good schooling are all attractions.

Private equity deal signed with Taiwan
The New Zealand Government's private equity fund and its Taiwanese equivalent have signed a partnership agreement which will see them both inject up to $160 million into a new cross-border venture capital fund.

Under the terms of the deal, the New Zealand Venture Investment Fund (NZVIF) and Taiwan's National Development Fund will stump up $25m each into any new venture capital (VC) fund looking to invest in Kiwi or Taiwanese business ventures.

The Angel Investor Market in Q1Q2 2012: A Market in Steady Recovery
The angel investor market in Q1,2 2012 showed signs of a continued steady recovery since the market correction in the second half of 2008 and the first half of 2009. Total investments in Q1,2 2012 were $9.2 billion, an increase of 3.1% over Q1,2 2011, according to the Center for Venture Research at the University of New Hampshire.

A total of 27,280 entrepreneurial ventures received angel funding in Q1,2 2012, a 3.7% increase from Q1,2 2011, and the number of active investors in Q1,2 2012 was 131,145 individuals, an increase of 5% from Q1,2 2011.
