Habit Health & Fitness Club in Wellington named New Zealand’s top health and fitness centre.

Leading Wellington health club Habit Platinum has been named New Zealand’s top facility in the national NZ Fitness Industry Awards held in Auckland on Saturday night.

The Johnston Street centre won the title of top Fitness Centre of the Year club for under 500 members, while the company’s recently opened 5th facility in Auckland’s Viaduct was a runner up in the same category.

Habit’s Majestic Centre club in Wellington also placed as one of three finalists in the category for best facility with over 500-1500 members. Habit’s clubs were the only health and fitness centres in Wellington to reach the finals.

Director Steve Pugh said the company was delighted with its success in the awards, which are coordinated by the industry’s governing bodies Fitness New Zealand and the Register of Exercise Professionals.

“The last few years have been challenging for many clubs and we are delighted to receive this award and very proud that all our Clubs were finalists in what has become a very competitive market” said Mr Pugh.

“What we do at Habit is get the basics right. We work very hard to set an exceptional industry standard and always keep customer service at the forefront of everything we do. We have a great team of very highly qualified staff and a brilliant club dynamics.”

A comprehensive Fitness NZ judging panel commented “a premium facility with premium service, managed with care and attention. The foundation club in the Habit group, “Platinum” is a fitting name for this award winning small club. There is no finer example of how a small club can provide exemplarity service and facilities to its members

Habit was launched eight years ago by Mr Pugh and renowned Wellington Physiotherapist Ben Teusse. Its philosophy is to take an integrated approach to health and fitness using Physiotherapists and Nutritionists as well as highly trained fitness instructors to create targeted fitness regimes. The company now employs over 70 staff and is the largest provider of ACC rehabilitation services in the Wellington region. More recently Habit staff and members helped raise funds to contribute to a $30k gym installed by habit at the new Ronald McDonald House in Newtown.

The NZ Fitness Industry awards were launched three years ago to celebrate excellence in the industry and to recognise the world class standards of New Zealand’s personal trainers, fitness instructors and fitness centres.

The rigorous judging process included the clubs making a detailed submission, ‘mystery shopper’ visits by members of the judging panel and input from members on how they rated all aspects of the centres.

The awards ceremony is an annual event, and has had prestigious guest speakers including MPs and Ministers Hon John Key, Hon Rodney Hide, Hon Murray McCull, Sue Kedgeley and Auckland Mayor Len Brown. The 2012 Awards were held on Saturday 24th November 2012 at the Pullman Hotel, Auckland where the winners were announced.

Habit’s facilities also include Wellington’s only private 33m saltwater lap pool as part of a recent 1 million dollar refurbishment at their Majestic Centre Club.
