Matua Takes Two Trophies at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards
Matua claimed two best in show trophies over the weekend at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards.
The 2011 Matua Single Vineyard Marlborough Chardonnay received two trophies: O-I New Zealand Reserve Wine of the Show and also the Rabobank New Zealand Ltd Champion Chardonnay.
Sam Glaetzer, Director of New Zealand Wine Production and Brands for Treasury Wine Estates, said that the latest trophies cap off a stellar winning season for Matua.
“We are thrilled and honoured to win two trophies, adding to our nine trophies for Matua and 15 gold medals in the last year. The Air New Zealand Wine awards are the most prestigious wine awards in the country, truly setting the benchmark for New Zealand Wine,” said Sam.
2012 award highlights
Matua Senior Winemaker Nikolai St George said: “This award completes another amazing year for Matua. This year we have won gold medals for five different Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs for the 2012 vintage.
“Just off the back of our wins as IWSC (International Wine & Spirits Competition) New Zealand Producer of the Year Award (London) and Best Sauvignon Blanc in the Southern Hemisphere (Five Nations Wine Challenge), we are the most internationally successful New Zealand wine brand in 2012.
“Making wine is more than a job, it’s the reason we get up in the morning. To win these trophies allows us to share our New Zealand heritage and our wines with more people across the world. We have a great deal to be proud of in New Zealand,” added Nikolai.
Sam added: “Across our entire New Zealand portfolio, we entered 14 wine competitions in five countries and won 30 gold medals.”
Sam said that the awards are a testament to the different styles and commitment to premium quality wines set out by the winemaking and viticulture teams.
“These are all quite different styles which show real depth to our collective viticulture and winemaking ability. We have won Gold medals this year for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Merlot and Malbec which shows our combined skills are across many varieties and New Zealand regions,” said Sam.
About Marlborough Chardonnay 2011
Pale straw in
colour, this wine displays bursts of honey, citrus blossom
and sweet toasted muesli on the nose. The palate is crisply
linear in structure with layers of stone fruit, fragrant
smoky notes and a clean, lingering minerality on the finish.
The aging potential for this wine is over the next 5 years,
notable f or a NZ white.
The 2011 Single Vineyard Chardonnay came from a vineyard site situated on the famous Brancott Road in Marlborough, chosen by our winemaker for its huge amount of potential. This wine, although young is already showing signs of exciting things to come.
