Central Otago’s Trophy Triumphs

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Central Otago’s Trophy Triumphs

2012 will go down as the year Central Otago firmly established its reputation as a producer of fine New Zealand wines, if the recent Trophy count is anything to go by.

Almost every winegrowing district within the Central Otago region has brought home a Trophy in the last six months - from Bendigo, to Alexandra, to Gibbston, to Wanaka, to Bannockburn - confirming every district within the region produces outstanding wines.

International Trophies include Valli’s success in UK, Akarua’s - both in UK and Hong Kong, Pisa Range Estate also in Hong Kong - not to mention Grasshopper Rock, Terra Sancta, Quartz Reef, Aurora, Mt Maude and BannackBrae’s, successes in taking out Trophies in major New Zealand wine competitions. Trophies were awarded not only for the region’s signature variety - Pinot Noir, but also for Riesling and Pinot Gris varieties.

“Central Otago wineries, have through necessity, focused on quality - producing the very best wines they can.” said Rudi Bauer Chair of COPNL (the promotions arm of the Central Otago Winegrowers Association). Our climate is unforgiving allowing little room for complacency – requiring serious commitment by producers and winemakers. “

“It’s very exciting to see the white varieties together with Methode Traditionelle and a Rose, receiving such recognition both locally and internationally. From a region that was once described as ‘Vineyards on the Edge’ we punch well above our weight – we’ve come a long way in just twenty- five years. I think all Central Otago producers across every district can be proud of what has been achieved. “ Rudi said.

Central Otago will be showcasing its distinctive winegrowing region at the PINOT NOIR NZ 2013 event being held in Wellington end January 2013. Participants will tell their collective and individual stories to a large international audience of visiting wine media and delegates.
