Kiwis Most Likely to Peek Early

Kiwis Most Likely to Peek Early
~ TomTom reveals the present (un)wrapping habits of people around the world ~

Auckland, 17 December 2012 – Can’t wait for Christmas to open your presents? Turns out you’re not alone. The Wrapping Report, a new international survey from TomTom looking at Christmas present behaviour shows that Kiwis topped the global sneaky-peek stakes with 65% confessing to having opened presents early, compared to 45% overall. New Zealand women are even more impatient, with 78% saying they have opened a gift ahead of schedule.

Opening presents early is not just a Kiwi phenomenon; among the most impatient were South Africans (64%), Brazilians (59%) and Canadians (57%). At the other end of the spectrum, displaying remarkable restraint were Belgians (33%), Germans (30%) and the self-disciplined Dutch (25%) were most able to wait.

The survey took in 13 countries and asked respondents to rate their present wrapping and unwrapping behaviour in the lead up to Christmas.

Every gift unwrapped requires a wrapper. Not surprisingly, women will do the majority of present wrapping this holiday season, with some elevating their efforts to work-of-art status, going all-out to make their gifts look as festive as possible. In New Zealand, 17% of women surveyed fell into this category, compared to 11% of Kiwi men. The majority of New Zealand men (63%) are basic wrappers, taking up to one minute per gift, making them among the speediest in the world.

Perhaps it’s the excitement of receiving a gift, but a quarter of New Zealand men (25%) said they ripped into their presents as fast as possible, taking less than 10 seconds to unwrap. More than 40% of both men (40%) and women (45%) said they were careful unwrappers, taking extra care so they could use the paper again.

At TomTom we are getting into the present wrapping spirit by inviting people around the world to unwrap and win,” said Chris Kearney, VP Asia Pacific, TomTom. “We are giving people the chance to ‘Unwrap the World’ to win one of six unforgettable driving adventures.
