Record December, Near Record Year for New Vehicle Sales

“NZTA registration data released today confirms earlier MIA numbers of a strong finish to the end of the year for new vehicle sales”, said Mr Perry Kerr, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association.

“December passenger car registrations of 6,102 were the highest monthly total since 1976 the year after the MIA began collating industry numbers. December registrations were up 14.6% (776 units) on December 2011. Commercial registrations of 1,649 were a massive 43.4% (499 units) ahead of 2011 and were the highest monthly registrations since 2000” he said

“Toyota dominated the market taking 36% (2,202 units) of passenger car registrations and 30% (500 units) of the commercial segment. In the passenger car sector Ford held onto second place with 534 registrations (9%) followed by Holden with 467 registrations (8%). With commercials Nissan was second with 187 registrations (11%) and Ford third with 177 registrations (11%)”.

“Turning to the full year Toyota topped the market for the 25th consecutive year in a row with combined total registrations of 21,620 vehicles (passenger cars 14,992 and commercials 6,628). Other placing include:-

In the luxury car segment BMW took first place with 1,646 sales ahead of Audi (1,540) and Mercedes-Benz (1,094)”

Mr Kerr noted “SUVs now dominate the New Zealand market (as is now the case in most markets) accounting for just over one out of every four sales (26% of the market) with a total of 26,052 registrations. The top selling SUVs for the year included:-

3rdHyundai Santa Fe - 1,733
4thToyota RAV4 - 1,585
5thFord Territory - 1,386

This segment showed an impressive 3% growth 2012 verse 2011. There were small reductions across the segments of medium and large passenger cars, vans and trucks” (details are attached).
