MEDIA RELEASE

cityfitness Moorhouse Set to Reopen 16 February, 2013

February 2013

cityfitness on Moorhouse Avenue in Christchurch has been given the green light to re-open on February 16 2013, 2 years since its closure due to earthquake damage in 2011.

The Harvey Norman Centre, which houses cityfitness moorhouse, has undergone extensive strengthening work and has met the requirements of the current building code. cityfitness has taken the opportunity to remodel the club, redesigning the changing rooms, including new showers, lockers, disabled bathrooms and a new hot water system. A new ceiling throughout the club will help the new air conditioning system take the winter chill away and also take the edge off the summer heat.

Along with these developments, an extra 200sqm of club floor space has been created to include a unique new boxing programme - Boxmaster; a 32 minute circuit programme and space for more weights.

Much fanfare is set to take place around the re-opening of the club with an open day planned to take place on 16 February from 8am - 4pm. Members of the public are invited to come in, take a tour and use the facilities for a free workout. The club is offering a new programme as part of its group exercise offering; R30, a 30 minute indoor cycle class, which will cater to the large corporate clientele at the club. The club will also be home to Frank Brothers Strength and Conditioning, which will offer crossfit-style training.

The latter, which will incur an additional cost to members, ‘is an exciting addition to the Moorhouse Ave club given the high profile of Ben and Owen Franks, both professional rugby players and All Blacks, and the strong brand of programming they and their father have created in the Christchurch community’ says cityfitness Director of Programming, Allyson Donnelly.

Immediately following the earthquake the owner of the Harvey Norman Centre started the reinstatement process. This was closely followed with cityfitness committing to an improvement programme which had been planned prior to the earthquake. cityfitness Managing Director Dominic Rogerson says ‘progress towards opening has been a case of three steps forward and two back as insurance issues were sorted and Council requirements with regards to strengthening changed. At last, after a number of false hopes, the end is in sight as we plan towards reopening Moorhouse on 16 February.

cityfitness moorhouse will be one of the first clubs in New Zealand to feature Boxmaster, our revolutionary new boxing programme. It’s unique to cityfitness and has been designed especially to create a highly motivating 30 minute boxing workout’.

News of the reopening of cityfitness Moorhouse comes shortly after the family owned fitness chain was recognised at the recent 2012 New Zealand Fitness Awards. The cityfitness group took out the 'FitnessWorks Innovation' award, and REPs Award - for contribution to professionalism and standards, and cityfitness PT Manager Joe Laiman took out the Mentor of the Year award.
cityfitness were also finalists in the Large Club and Group Fitness - Pre-Choreography categories.
