Super Kiwi summer a boon for the motel industry

The long spell of hot, sunny weather across New Zealand has led to a mini-boom in domestic tourism, with many motels reporting their best summer season in years, says the Motel Association of New Zealand (MANZ).

Many Kiwis are taking advantage of the fine weather to escape to their favourite holiday spots more often than usual over the summer months, providing a welcome relief for motel-owners after a couple of lean years MANZ Chief Executive Michael Baines says.

“Almost any motel within the vicinity of a beach is reporting a bumper season, which is a nice change after last summer in particular,” Mr Baines says.

In addition to the financial benefits, the stunning weather has led to a lift in confidence for the motel industry, with many owners planning and investing for better times ahead after some tough years in the post-GFC downturn.

“While we appreciate that weather like this makes it tough for many Kiwis who make a living in primary industries, day after day of cloudless skies and warm summer temperatures are a fantastic advertisement for our holiday spots,” Mr Baines says.

“We know how fickle the Kiwi weather can be – my advice would be get out and enjoy it while it lasts,” Mr Baines concluded.
