Fall in online job vacancies in February

Fall in online job vacancies in February

Online job vacancies decreased in February following a rise in January, according to the latest Jobs Online report from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

The latest seasonally adjusted results show that skilled vacancies advertised online fell by 2.5 percent in February and all online job vacancies fell by 3.0 percent.

Skilled vacancies fell in most industry groups. The information technology industry had the largest fall over the month (down 11.9 percent), followed by healthcare and medical (down 9.1 percent).

Skilled vacancies fell in most regions over the month. The North Island – excluding Auckland and Wellington region – had the largest fall (down 5.8 percent), followed by Wellington (down 4.7 percent). Canterbury was the only region that recorded an increase over the month (up 0.8 percent).

Over the year to February, skilled vacancies increased by 0.2 percent and all vacancies increased by 2.9 percent.

Vacancy growth in Canterbury continued to be strong over the year (up 14.1 percent), driven mainly by the construction and engineering industry (up 47.8 percent).

“Canterbury has seen a shortage of labour and skills in the construction and engineering area due to the earthquake rebuild, which is driving strong vacancy growth in the region” says the Ministry’s Manager of Labour Market and Business Performance, David Paterson.
