Truenet a Catalyst for ISPs to Improve Performance

Truenet a Catalyst for ISPs to Improve Performance

Big Performance Improvements - Snap and Orcon

Two ISPs, Orcon and Snap, successfully achieved significant improvements to performance for their customers in direct response to TrueNet monitoring. They found the cause of frequent delayed downloads of our New Zealand test webpage creating two typical download times, 0.5s and 2.0s, and reduced the frequency of the 2s downloads.

Snap achieved the change in May and Orcon in June.

Orcon

Improvements in the first week of June were achieved by Orcon after finding an issue in their network using the TrueNet data: "We have been using TrueNet data to help uncover issues and drive improvements to our network. One piece of information in particular lead us to make changes that have more than halved our webpage load times." - Simon Allard, Orcon.

Chart 1 shows the number of tests that were within each range, before the Orcon change at 2am on the 6th, and after. Prior to the 6th, Orcon webpage download tests were very slow, the worst in our ISP sample. Almost 40% of tests were between 1.5s and 2s. Once they implemented their change TrueNet noticed an hour of missed tests, then as tests came back up, over 80% were less than 0.5s.

Snap

Snap made changes to their network on the 7th May with results showing through this month. Sam Brock-Smith, CTO Snap states "Snap are continually rolling out network enhancements to ensure all of our customers receive the best possible Internet experience, across all access types including fibre. We're delighted to see Truenet's independent results confirming our focus on network performance is paying off." The impact took a few days, but the changes were even more impressive than Orcon's, see Chart 2 for the number of tests in each range before and after the change.

Snap now has almost 90% of all tests completing within 0.5s.
