Job Creation In Capital Up 5%

MEDIA RELEASE

12 June 2013

Job Creation In Capital Up 5%

New jobs are on the rise in Wellington, with the SEEK New Job Ad Index today showing a 5% increase in the number of jobs in the region for the year to date.

Furthermore, in the last month alone, when new jobs across the country dipped 1.8%, the number of jobs in Wellington grew 2%.

“After a slow start to the year it’s encouraging to see Wellington performing beyond many people’s expectations with strong job creation in May,” comments Janet Faulding, General Manager of SEEK New Zealand.

There are currently more than 2,500 jobs advertised in Wellington on seek.co.nz, good news for those looking to take on a new role.

Information & Communication Technology roles lead the way with the greatest number of jobs in the region, with almost one third of all advertised opportunities in Wellington in this sector. This is followed by Administration and Trades & Services roles, with the top five areas of greatest opportunity rounded out by Accounting and Sales.

Not only are the number of opportunities on the rise, but employer confidence is also bouncing back. A survey carried out recently by the Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce found that 44.9% of Wellington businesses expect their business situation to improve over the next 12 months, an increase of almost 10% from the previous quarter.

“An increase in business confidence often leads to the creation of more jobs as companies feel positive about implementing plans for future growth. This is no exception with almost one third of businesses surveyed expecting to increase their fulltime staff numbers in the next 12 months,” says Ms Faulding.

The SEEK New Job Ad Index declined in both Auckland and Canterbury, with decreases of 2.1% and 6.7% respectively from April 2013.
