Initiative shows career pathways for managers of volunteers

New initiative highlights career pathways for managers of volunteers

A new tool to assist managers of volunteers to plot their skill development and further learning opportunities will be launched by Volunteering New Zealand (VNZ) on Wednesday 12 June.

The product of three years of work by a VNZ-led national working group, the tool comprises a set of Competencies, a matrix to plot individual strengths and areas for growth, and a searchable, national database of relevant professional development options.

VNZ Chief Executive Vanisa Dhiru explains that this work has been done in direct response to widespread calls from managers of volunteers across New Zealand.

“Managing volunteers is a career so many people just fall into, yet it is actually a really important job that requires an array of skills.  Managers of volunteers told us that they wanted a career pathway to help them progress in the profession, and also so they could prove to others just how many competencies they do demonstrate in their work”, say Vanisa.

A key feature of the Competencies is their broad nature. VNZ Programme Manager Claire Teal explains, “Managers of volunteers across New Zealand are so diverse, and they have such diverse roles. Trying to make a list of tasks that all managers of volunteers do would be impossible”.

After wide feedback from managers of volunteers around the country, the final set of Competencies address broad skill areas, but also allow people to tailor the specifics to their own situation. “This makes for a truly individual document that people can use to plot their development over time”, Claire says.
