Bus Rapid Transport Will Drive Step Change in Wellington

Press Release – 18 June 2013

Bus Rapid Transport Will Drive Step Change in Wellington Public Transport

NZ Bus has today welcomed the findings of the Wellington Public Transport Spine Study and associated plans for the Basin Bridge and Mt Victoria tunnel duplication.

NZ Bus CEO Zane Fulljames says the proposed changes cater for the integration of multiple modes of transport, and the plan for bus rapid transport (BRT) ahead of light rail recognises the importance of an efficient yet flexible public transport network.

“Taking a totally integrated view of the network recognises the growing importance of cyclists and pedestrians in making it easier and faster to get around the city, a factor we have observed in a number of cities renowned for public transport excellence and a view we support unreservedly” Mr Fulljames went on to say.

Mr Fulljames observes that rapid transport is a critical element of many successful transport systems and BRT can provide many of the benefits of light rail without the cost and inflexibility. It can take many forms and with appropriate planning of routes and associated infrastructure can use shared road space while utilising high quality vehicles to stimulate public interest.

NZ Bus has been involved in the Spine Study since its inception. As the largest bus operator in Wellington, we are committed to meeting the growing dependence on reliable public transport services and support the direction that the combined package announced today will provide.

“The key now is to work quickly through the remaining consultation stages and to take the bold steps required to implement the changes”, Mr Fulljames says. “In the meantime, let’s move quickly to enhance the current network infrastructure, bus priority lanes and infrastructure to deliver a much needed step change in public transport in Wellington.
