Sony Launches 3LCD Laser Light Source Projector

Sony Launches World’s First 3LCD Laser Light Source Projector

Auckland, 3 July 2013 – Today, Sony announces the launch of its ground-breaking 3LCD Laser Light Source Projector in Australia and New Zealand. The new model, VPL-FHZ55, is a WUXGA-class (1920 x 1200) installation projector based on a blue laser light source, and is the world’s first 3LCD laser projector. Capable of achieving a brilliant 4,000 lumens, the VPL-FHZ55 is one of the brightest projectors of its kind and delivers a range of performance capabilities that eliminate many issues associated with conventional lamp-based projection.

“3LCD laser projection technology really marks a shift in the market. It produces images of extremely high white light and colour light output for optimal colour performance compared to other forms of laser or hybrid projection. Combine this with the benefits of laser, like the almost instant on/off capabilities and the absence of a conventional lamp makes 3LCD laser projectors virtually maintenance-free and eco-friendly,” said Alex Lofts, Product Manager Visual Presentation, Australia and New Zealand. “Combined with the right mix of operational and design features, the results are 3LCD laser projectors like the VPL-FHZ55 deliver superior quality and usability - which is ideal for applications in education, corporate organisations or museums. Laser with 3LCD technology really takes projectors to the next level of development.”

The projector’s light engine uses blue laser as its light source, which excites a phosphorous material that, in turn, creates white light. The white light is delivered to a 3LCD optical system, generating constant, vibrant RGB colour through a light splitting process. The resulting 4,000 lumens output produces brightness sufficient for a broad range of commercial applications.

The VPL-FHZ55 offers virtually maintenance-free operation for up to 20,000 hours* of expected light source, display device and filter use. This frees users from the worry of lamp change, and provides a good return on investment with a low total cost of ownership. This is especially important in the corporate, entertainment, museum, hospitality and education sectors, where the projector is used for extended periods of time.

In line with Sony’s efforts to drive greater environmental-friendliness in its projectors range, the mercury-free VPL-FHZ55 comes equipped with energy efficient features such as;
• Auto Light Dimming, which dims light output to as low as 5% when left powered on without use;
• Auto Brightness Adjustment, which adjusts illumination to the picture presented; and
• Constant Brightness Mode, which allows users to maintain brightness throughout the expected 20,000 hours* life by driving the projector at reduced light output.

Using a laser light source also enables the greatest operability of the projector. It can be switched on or off in an instant, resuming to full brightness easily without any limitations in the number or duration of on/off cycles. The Constant Brightness Mode allows stable projection useful for applications including digital signage, museums or even classrooms, where it is critical to maintain a consistent visual experience for viewers.

Users of the VPL-FHZ55 enjoy supreme installation flexibility – “tilt angle free” capability lets it be positioned freely at any angle, on its side, or even upside down for seamless installation in nearly any setting. Combined with 1.6x standard zoom lens, V:+60% H:+/-32% lens shift, built-in edge-blending and geometric correction, the projector is fully capable of advanced commercial integration.

Local availability
The VPL-FHZ55 comes in either a black- or white-coloured chassis, comes with a 5 year, 12,000 hour warranty and is planned to be available in August 2013 at an SRP of $7999.95 with pre-orders now.
