Maori Television’s Website Nominated to Compete in World Summit Awards

Maori Television’s recently launched website www.maoritelevision.com is already gaining attention with a nomination to compete in the World Summit Awards 2013, honouring excellence in multimedia and e-Content creation.

In determining the New Zealand finalists, judges were looking for examples of clever and innovative thinking along with those projects that show the benefits of information and communication technology for the development of society at large.

As well as improved accessibility, Maori Television’s website is focussed on supporting language revitalisation objectives by offering viewers the ability to access and interact with content online.

Users are able to search for programmes based on individual language interest, by selecting the appropriate level ranging from high amounts of Maori language through to high amounts of English. They are also able to move easily between Maori and English language content.

New features on the website include the opportunity to provide feedback in real time, comment on selected news stories and share what is going on in their world with a ‘Share Your News’ function. It also features increased social media engagement with viewers able to recommend, share and tweet almost all online content.

Speaking of the nomination Stephen Smith, General Manager Digital says: “We are very proud of our website and delighted to have been recognised for excellence. Our dual language proposition makes us accessible to all New Zealanders, providing viewers around the world with enhanced access to our most popular programming and the latest in news and current affairs with a Maori perspective, on any device.”

Maori Television will now go on to compete against nominations selected from 100 different countries, with this year’s winners to be announced after final judging takes place in Estonia in late October. Other New Zealand finalists include Radio New Zealand, Loomio, The Life Education Trust and The Science Learning Lab.
