Kiwi Karter Signed By Australian Management Group

Fast-rising Kiwi karter Caleb Cross is the latest promising young driver signed by Australian motorsport marketing and management company Velocity Management Group.

Cross, 13, from Christchurch, is the reigning New Zealand and New Zealand Schools' Junior Restricted 100cc Yamaha class champion and with father Hamish and mother Rebecca signed a career management contract with the Melbourne-based company late last month.

The Velocity Management Group is a specialist sponsorship, marketing and driver management consultancy and Cross will be joining a number of talented young Australian drivers - including Kiwi-born V8 Supercar sensation Scott McLaughlin, former Australian Formula Ford champion Cameron Waters and Australia's top young female driver Renee Gracie - on its books.

Group founder and director Chris Jewell is an industry veteran with over 20 years experience in all facets of the marketing and management of the sport and says that the service he will be offering Caleb and his family will be all-encompassing.

"Our program," he says, "includes fitness, diet, lifestyle, public speaking, media training and proper career planning guidance and management. Everything a promising young driver like Caleb needs to help him achieve his goal of a career in V8 Supercars."

Jewell played a key role in established V8 Supercar star Jason Bright's early career and though he says it is getting harder and harder for promising young drivers to 'climb the motorsport ladder' the success both in the New Zealand V8 SuperTourer and Australian V8 Supercar categories of Fujitsu-backed 20-year-old Scott McLaughlin is proof that, with the right plan and backing, it is still possible.

Having now won club, South Island, New Zealand and New Zealand Schools' titles in the Junior Restricted 100cc Yamaha class, Cross now moves to KartSport New Zealand's Junior ranks, with his first major meeting in the Junior 100cc Yamaha class, the annual two-day Blossom one in the Hawke's Bay in early September.

After that he will run in both the Junior Yamaha and Junior Rotax classes at KartSport New Zealand's North Island championship meeting in Wellington over Labour Weekend before heading across the Tasman to contest the South Australian Open Sprint Championship meeting at Adelaide's Bolivar Raceway over the first weekend of November.
