Dishwasher detergent survey: Rinse before you wash?

Dishwasher detergent survey: Rinse before you wash?

A waste of time, energy and money.

Auckland, 10 September – A new survey from Canstar Blue shows that many New Zealanders are spending more time and money than necessary to get their dishes clean.

The nationwide survey, examining customer satisfaction with dishwasher detergent, showed that 80% of Kiwis rinse their dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, wasting time, water and energy.

Derek Bonnar, General Manager, Canstar New Zealand, says that dirty plates are no problem for modern dishwashers and detergents.

“Today’s dishwasher detergents are designed to attack food particles left on dishes. Pre-rinsing is not only unnecessary; it also wastes water, power and time.

“Manufacturers recommend scraping plates, but not rinsing.  From today, that’s one less chore for my and many other households.”

Concern for the environment was evident with a small minority, with 1-in-5 only ever buying environmentally friendly dishwasher detergent. As in other supermarket categories that Canstar Blue has examined, a large percentage of respondents chase bargains, buying whatever dishwasher detergent is on special.

In the space of a generation, the dishwasher has moved from an upmarket luxury item to a standard kitchen appliance, says Bonnar.

“Three quarters in our survey say that a dishwasher is a must have appliance in their home.”

The survey measured consumer satisfaction in five categories:
1.      Value for money
2.      Effectiveness
3.      Environmental friendliness
4.      Smell
5.      Overall satisfaction
Taking out the overall satisfaction award was Ecostore, says Bonnar.

“Congratulations to Ecostore. This is the second category win for brand, which had previously taken out the laundry powder category earlier this year.”
