Loud and Proud Westie to open Mitre 10 MEGA New Lynn

Mitre 10’s latest MEGA store will open in New Lynn, Auckland on Thursday 17 October. The Hon. Paula Bennett, Member of Parliament for Waitakere, will cut the ribbon for the New Lynn Mitre 10 MEGA store, which the loud and proud Westie will open to the public on 18 October.

The New Lynn store is Mitre 10’s 35th MEGA store, and part of an on-going expansion programme. It is the first of three new Mitre 10 MEGA stores to be opened in 2013 with Porirua and Taupo to follow before the end of the year. The 12,000 square metre store is owned by Cam Caithness, who also owns the very successful Mitre 10 MEGA Warkworth, winner of the Best Large Format Store in the New Zealand Retailers’ Association 2012 Top Shop Awards.

Mr Caithness says the key to a great store is having the best service, with customer-focused staff and strong community ties.

“This new store requires a staff of 130 people. We have been working closely with the local Work and Income office to fill the roles we had available, so we know many of the staff, and the staff that come from the previous, smaller Mitre 10 store have strong roots in the community. We’ve hired some great people who have been well trained in home DIY through on-site training facilities in our purpose-built e-learning room,” says Mr Caithness.

“We are keen to get into the community and provide a helping hand. My Warkworth store is a strong supporter of local sporting clubs, as well as the local college and other community causes. It’s really important to us to help fundraising in the area, and we’ll be offering our store BBQ to local schools, clubs and charities should they want to use our store for a sausage sizzle. We’ll also be looking into other ways to help fundraising in the community.”

Mr Caithness is aware that New Lynn is one of Auckland’s largest regeneration projects, and believes that the local market is ripe for some good, old-fashioned Kiwi renovation.

“The new store has a 2,000 square metre garden centre and will provide new ranges not previously stocked in a Mitre 10 MEGA store. Manchester, carpet, wallpaper, and marine safety equipment are among the product mix available to customers.

“We’re going to have areas within the shop where customers can sit down and look at paint samples or kitchen plans, and really get a feel for what they want to do with their home. We don’t want them just standing in an aisle trying to make a decision, we want them to be excited and motivated by what’s around them.”

The 6,000 square metres of retail will be aided by new LED lighting and an intelligent building-management system to control the lighting and air temperature to ensure energy efficiency. The store provides a 2,500 square metre undercover trade drive-thru, a large timber and bulk landscape yard, car park, as well as a café and children’s play area.

Mitre 10 MEGA New Lynn is located on the corner of Clark Street and Astley Avenue.
