Mount Gay Rum’s Global Ambassador to visit New Zealand

Mount Gay Rum’s Global Ambassador to visit New Zealand to launch the highly anticipated Black Barrel Rum

November brings Mount Gay’s Global Rum Ambassador Miguel Smith to our shores to launch Mount Gay’s latest creation – Black Barrel, into the New Zealand market.

Miguel brings with him a wealth of knowledge gained from working in the world’s most prestigious venues, including a significant period as mixologist at London’s Brompton Brands’ Mahiki, then head bartender at Brompton Club.

Both venues are regularly visited and loved by princes, actors and musicians including the Kings of Leon, Beyonce, Rihanna, Jay Z, David Gandy, Dita Von Teese and Kate Moss.

After stepping away from hosting the A-List, Miguel is now Mount Gay’s dedicated Brand Ambassador for Europe, Asia and Pacific regions and runs a series of marketing initiatives including training programs, dinners, mixology contests.

After just a year in this role, Miguel has already been nominated for the 2012 Brand Ambassador of the Year for the Golden Rum Barrel Awards.

Born and bred in the world’s rum capital Barbados, Miguel, has a personal and passionate connection for this award-winning rum.

“I seriously enjoy working on the Mount Gay Rum portfolio, and feel proud to present and share with enthusiastic rum and crafted aged spirits consumers, bartenders, journalists and bloggers, what makes Mount Gay so unique and special: our unparalleled history, our British heritage, our Caribbean roots, our artisanal production and of course our complex flavours”.

“My role is to help build the Mount Gay brand, introduce our portfolio of aged rums, between Eclipse, Silver, XO and 1703, present our latest expression, Black Barrel, maximise our distribution - especially in the On Trade - and increase rate of sale with inspiring suggestions.”

Black Barrel is due to be launched in New Zealand in December this year and is already causing a stir amongst the trade and rum lovers. Like the other Mount Gay expressions, Black Barrel is made from double pot and single column distillates that are aged separately in their own toasted oak whiskey barrels until they reach maturity.
In addition to the launch off the new expression, Mount Gay will be celebrating its 310th anniversary later this year.

About Mount Gay

Every great story begins with a time and a place.

A legal deed dated from 20th of February 1703 confirms the existence of a “pot still house” on our sugar cane Estate in Barbados, establishing us as the World’s oldest rum producer. Our distillery name honours the pioneering Sir John Gay who perfected the distinctive Mount Gay style.

Still today, only the finest sugar cane molasses and pure water filtered through the coral heart of the island are selected to create Mount Gay rums.

Perpetuating a long-standing Barbadian tradition for more than 310 years, Mount Gay rums are handcrafted from a blend of single column and double copper pot distillates and matured in toasted oak barrels, delivering aromatic, flavourful taste, body and refined character.
