Young Enterprise Scheme – Regional Awards 2013

Young Enterprise Scheme – Regional Awards 2013

Tauranga Chamber of Commerce today announced the winners of the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) Regional Awards 2013 who were Soar from Tauranga Girls College.

Category winners were:
Tauranga Regional Winner Soar – Tauranga Girls College
Regional Runner Up Award Royala Enterprise – Otumoetai College
Business Operations Award Bing – Otumoetai College
Customer Service Award Divine Candels – Tauranga Boys College
Marketing Award Choco De Lite – Katikati College
Manufacturing and Production Award Royala Enterprise – Otumoetai College
Innovation Award For Keepsake – Aquinas College
Sustainability Award One Clothing – Tauranga Boys College
Sales Award Bare Hands – Te Puke College

Each of the six person student teams in the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) have worked over the last eight months to develop and market products and services. There are 180 students in 18 teams from 6 schools this year in the Young Enterprise Scheme in the region.

Regional Co-ordinator Anne Pankhurst said, “What is particularly exciting is the high standard of business ideas that our region produces. The winner of the Regional Award will now travel to Wellington and present to a panel of Dragons Dens and may receive a National Award.”

Local student Tauranga Girls College student Loren McCarthy came second out of over 2200 students across the country in the YES Exam Mark, which is a fantastic achievement.

Loren also gave an excellent rundown on her trip to Hong K ong to compete in the FedEx Asia Pacific International Trade Challenge, where she and her partner were placed second.

The winner of the YES Regional Awards was Soar from Tauranga Girls College. Soar created a product called Collide, a crunchy peanut butter and chocolate hazelnut spread. They worked in collaboration with Ceres Organics based in Auckland to create the product. All of the YES teams have a very strong social awareness and one of the great things that Soar did was provide breakfast one Friday for the Gate Pa School, a very well attended breakfast that day when the Wheeties were surpassed by the Collide on toast.

The runner up team was Royala Enterprise who partnered with local firm Kiwifruitz to create a bar called #nombar. Kiwifruitz have just completed another production run which will be sold in shops in China and Argentina. The lessons learnt for these students working with Grant Jefferys and his team and such an exciting export company cannot be underestimated.

The Tauranga Chamber of Commerce is delighted to co-ordinate the Young Enterprise Scheme and congratulates all the students, teachers, mentors and thanks the support from our regional sponsors, particularly Powerco.
