Construction sector growth having ripple effect

MEDIA RELEASE

23rd October 2013

Construction sector growth having ripple effect

It seems the Construction sector is sharing the growth, as the latest data released by SEEK shows the Design and Architecture industries have notched up the largest increase in new jobs since September 2012. Design and Architecture roles have grown by 51% year on year indicating the flow on effects of a strengthened building and construction industry.

There were 300 opportunities listed under Design and Architecture on seek.co.nz in September 2013 and over 50% were located in Auckland, mirroring the city’s property-related construction boom.

Government and Defence posted the second largest increase with a 49% growth in roles since September 2012, while Self-Employment opportunities increased by 35% and Trades and Services jobs grew by 32%. Construction listings rounded out the top five sectors with growth of 30% recorded.

“This year we have seen a steady increase in the number of roles advertised across a variety of sectors. Construction has been pivotal in this growth and we are now seeing this also reflected in design, architectural and trades and service roles," says Janet Faulding, General Manager of SEEK New Zealand.

“As the economy continues to strengthen we expect to see these positive signs of growth reflected in more and more industries.”

Despite the IT sector falling outside the top ten fastest growing industries; it continues to top the list for the highest number of job listings. In September alone, almost 3,500 jobs were advertised in Information and Communication Technology across the country, testament to this sector's size and popularity.

“IT continues its reign at the top of the ladder, with almost 3,500 jobs listed in September 2013 and over 30,500 jobs since September last year. A strong performance by a sector that provides the most opportunities at the moment,” says Janet Faulding.

There are currently over 16,000 jobs advertised on seek.co.nz and almost 200,000 opportunities listed since January.
