Asia Pacific Region Gears Up for Busiest Day in FedEx History
SYDNEY, October 29, 2013–FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) expects to see its busiest day in company history when it moves more than 22 million shipments around the world on December 2.
During the busiest week of the year, December 1 – 7, FedEx expects more than 85 million shipments to move through its global networks. This is a 13 percent increase compared to last year’s busiest week.
“In addition to e-commerce, retail inventory such as personal consumer electronics, apparel and luxury goods will drive the increase in FedEx holiday volumes and the Asia Pacific region plays an important role in the production of these goods,” said David L. Cunningham, Jr., president, Asia Pacific, FedEx Express. “With the strength of our global network and our Asian operations, both small and large businesses will benefit from our connectivity within the region—as well as with Europe and North America – to ensure a successful holiday season for their customers.”
E-commerce is thriving globally at three to four times the rate of traditional retail buying in brick and mortar stores, and the Asia Pacific region is at the forefront with sales expected to grow 23%, accounting for nearly one-third of all e-commerce sales around the globe and outpacing the rest of the world. With more than 18,000 committed FedEx team members across Asia Pacific and an extensive suite of shipping and delivery solutions, FedEx is poised to help customers take advantage of the continued boom in online purchasing.
FedEx expects to increase its global workforce with tens of thousands of seasonal positions to help handle the surge in holiday shipments.
The impact of the expected higher volumes was included in the company’s earnings guidance issued in September.
