New ATEED major events manager appointed

A key figure in Singapore’s recent rise as a world sporting events city has been appointed as Manager Major Events at Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED).

Rakel Liew will start at ATEED on 9 December, moving to Auckland from Singapore where she is the current Director – Business Partnerships for the Singapore Sports Council (SSC).

While at the SSC, Ms Liew has established an events strategy for Sporting Singapore and has been instrumental in the development of a portfolio of key major events including the Standard Chartered Singapore Rugby Sevens and OSIM Singapore Triathlon.

Ms Liew has also held director level roles at the SSC in the areas of strategic planning and special operations, and new business development.

ATEED General Manager Destination and Marketing, Rachael Carroll, says: “I am thrilled that Rakel is joining ATEED.

“What Singapore has achieved in the major events space over the last five to ten years is amazing, and Rakel has played a big part in this.

“Rakel is highly strategic and passionate about the role of major events in transforming cities and countries. The international experience she brings from SSC will be of great benefit to Auckland, ATEED and our major events portfolio.”

Ms Liew says that she is looking forward to living and working in Auckland. “In my recent visit to Auckland I was impressed by the warmth of those whom I met, starting with the airport staff through to the customer service staff at the shops.

“I am very excited about the move and thankful for the opportunity to contribute to the vision of making Auckland the world’s most liveable city.”
