Ham, Roast Potatoes & Pavlova Top Choices For Kiwi Christmas

Ham, Roast Potatoes and Pavlova Are Top Choices For Kiwi Christmas Dinner But Beef Climbing the Popularity Stakes

A national Christmas dinner survey led by Green Meadows Beef, a New Zealand owned, family business that produces 100% grass-fed, free-range beef, has revealed what Kiwis will be eating this festive season. Ham is the favoured meat (61%) with chicken (48%) and beef (37%) coming in second and third. Roast turkey ended up in seventh place with only 22 percent highlighting it as their preferred Christmas meat.

Roast potatoes were named top side dish (37%), followed by gravy (29%) and stuffing (18%). When it comes to sweet treats, Pavlova is – unsurprisingly – top of the puds (31%), with Christmas pudding (16%) and trifle (12%) in reserve.

“It’s not a shock that ham is still the favourite choice for Christmas dinner as it’s such a deeply ingrained Kiwi tradition. However, it’s great to see that New Zealand beef is not too far behind, even trumping roast turkey,” says Green Meadows Beef director, Nick Carey. “Beef is becoming more and more popular as a Christmas dinner option internationally, including in the UK, and it looks like that is starting to happen here as well.”

Nick believes beef is beating traditional turkey as it’s easier to cook, resulting in a more relaxed Christmas day.

“It is far more difficult to dry a good piece of beef out, compared to turkey, which is so easy to get wrong. There is nothing worse than overcooked, tasteless turkey! If someone is keen to give beef a go this Christmas, I would recommend slow-cooking a quality, grass-fed beef fillet, marinated with juniper, rosemary, thyme, orange zest, salt and olive oil. Serve with crispy roast potatoes and gravy made from the juices left over at the end of cooking. It’s delicious, hassle-free and will impressive the most discerning dinner guest.”

The majority of households will be inviting 6-10 people over for dinner, while 10 percent will be inviting more than 20.
