2013 New Vehicle Registrations Highest Since 1984, Exceeding 113,000

“Final registration data for 2013 is in and it confirms a strong finish to the end of a strong year for new vehicle sales, with 113,117 registrations, a significant increase of 12,322 vehicles (12.2%) over 2012, and the highest annual sales since 1984”, said Mr David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association.

“2013 will likely be remembered as the year in which the NZ economy finally left the starting line on the path to economic recovery from a number of setbacks including the 2008/09 financial crisis and restrictions on supply of new vehicles following 2011 floods in Thailand and the 2011 tsunami in Japan” say Mr Crawford.

“Commercial registrations of 2,405 were a massive 45.8% (756 units) ahead of December 2012 and were the highest December registrations ever. December passenger car registrations of 6,371 were the highest monthly total since 1976 the year after the MIA began collating industry numbers” he said.

“Toyota dominated the market taking 23.7% (1,512 units) of passenger car registrations.

Holden held onto second place with 979 registrations (15.4%) followed by Ford with 621 registrations (9.7%). For the month of December, Ford led the commercial market with 619 registrations (25.7%) with Toyota a close second with 603 (25.1%).

“Turning to the full year Toyota topped the market for the 26thth a row with combined total registrations of 23,705 vehicles (passenger cars 16,172 and

commercials 7,533). Other placing include:-

The Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger continued their yearlong battle for sales primacy. The

Ford Ranger was the bestselling commercial model for the month of December with 573

units (24%) followed by the Toyota Hilux with 458 units (19%). However, the Toyota Hilux

retained its very long history as the top selling commercial vehicle for 2013 with 5,041

registrations (16.4%) closely followed by the Ford Ranger with 4,924 registrations (16%).

In the luxury car segment BMW took first place with 1,907 sales ahead of Audi (1,820) and

Mercedes-Benz (1,482)”
