January 2014 Monthly Economic Indicators

The January Monthly Economic Indicators (MEI) was published today on the Treasury Website at 2:00pm. The report provides a summary of recent economic events.

The main points:
• The New Zealand economy picked up pace in the second half of 2013, posing near-term upside risks to the Treasury’s Half Year Update forecasts...
• ...and bringing us closer to the start of the monetary tightening cycle.
• Tapering gets underway in the US, while vulnerabilities in emerging markets re-appear.

The special topic this month examines the impacts to date of ‘Abenomics’ on New Zealand’s trade links with Japan.
