Transitional Cathedral wins NZ Project of the Year

PMI New Zealand Project Management Awards 2014

Recognising and celebrating outstanding achievements in the project management profession for 2014

Project Management Institute is the world's leading not-for-profit professional membership association for the project, program and portfolio management profession with over 200 chapters worldwide. The PMI New Zealand chapter, established in 1994, represents 3,500 project management members and certification holders.

The New Zealand Project Management Awards are now in their 6th year. These awards have grown steadily in stature and importance as PMINZ has pursued the recognition of outstanding project management achievements as a part of its vision for raising the profile of the project management profession. The award winners were announced on 4th September 2014 during the PMINZ 20th Annual Conference in Christchurch.

This year saw the number of nominations increase to record levels as organisations from a range of industries used the awards as a vehicle to acknowledge the great work they had done on the delivery of successful projects and the people who oversaw that success.

Calum Robertson, Vice President of PMINZ and member of the Awards judging panel, has been heartened by the number and standard of nominations this year. “We have been greatly impressed by the quality of project management demonstrated through nominations in all categories, particularly PMINZ Project of the Year. With such a high proportion of New Zealand’s GDP invested in projects, it is important that we promote and acknowledge excellence within the profession. The judging panel faced difficult decisions in a number of categories and all New Zealand Project Management Award winners can be assured they are worthy winners”.

The Project Management Institute of New Zealand (PMINZ) are pleased to announce the winners in the following categories.

PMINZ Project of the Year

The Transitional Cathedral – Beca, Christchurch

This project demonstrates an ingrained holistic approach to project management – critical to delivering complex, bespoke, novel projects. The technical difficulties, challenges, and ‘pure muscle and hard work’ needed to deliver this project are significant in themselves, but the true outcome is one of the first steps on the way to rebuilding Christchurch. The ‘Flagship of the Canterbury Rebuild’ is a story of faith, leadership, bravery, and the significance of delivering truth and beauty for a recovering city.

In accepting the award, Project Manager Johnny McFarlane dedicated the prize to Cathedral Dean Lynda Patterson who died in July of this year.

Project Plus PMO of the Year

Fujitsu PMO, Wellington

Twelve months ago there was no PMO at Fujitsu and the delivery of projects was not as successful as it needed to be. The PMO is now a centralised, effective, predictable high performing unit within business delivering to and above expectations. This unit now stands on its own feet providing services to core customers and to independent customers that only buy project delivery services direct from Fujitsu. A model PMO doing what it should.

Entity Group Emerging Project Manager of the Year

Marcy McCullum, Christchurch City Council, Christchurch

Marcy’s projects are non-standard and she has demonstrated that she is both adaptable and open minded. Marcy has worked, and thrived in often difficult and high pressure situations. We believe Marcy has the potential to make a difference in the profession and has what it takes to be the Entity Group Emerging Project Manager of the Year.

SWAYPEOPLE Project Manager of the Year

Mercedes Santos - NZ Transport Agency, Hamilton

Mercedes has demonstrated her wide range of capabilities and willingness to take on any challenge that arises. She is a true team player and has proved herself to be a capable leader and a very highly competent professional who has successfully delivered projects through all phases, receiving very positive feedback from clients, end-customers and colleagues.

PMINZ Public Sector Project of the Year

South Brighton Community Centre Transitional Facility – Christchurch City Council

This project could not have been achieved without the open, trusting and community spirited teams of people and companies who did little complaining and lots of work, to deliver this community facility once again to the residents of the East.

Quest Serviced Apartments Volunteer of the Year

Tattianna Picoaga, PMINZ Northern Branch

Tattianna displays great commitment by her involvement in four roles: PMINZ Northern Branch Volunteer Coordinator, PMINZ Auckland Sub-branch Coordinator, PMINZ Relationship Director and as "Project Spring Clean" Project Manager. Holding multiple roles does not make a Volunteer of the year but delivering high quality, improvements and tireless efforts do.

PMINZ Research Achievement Award

Dr. Temitope Egbelakin

Dr. Temitope’s findings provide answers to questions aimed at understanding the project management practices that firms should focus on in their attempt to ensure superior project performance and clients’ satisfaction. This research is of practical significance to organisations, clients, consultants and contractors and the New Zealand construction industry as a whole.
