Kiwi Competitors Do New Zealand Proud at World Young Shepherds Challenge
Beef + Lamb New Zealand is delighted that both New Zealand representatives at the second World Young Shepherds Challenge are winners.
The two-day challenge took place in Auvergne, France last week, where Mitchel Hoare and Katey Craig competed against shepherds from 15 other countries in an international test of sheep farming skills.
Nineteen-year-old Mitchel, a senior cadet at Waipaoa Station, won first place in the under-22 age group, bagging a 1,500 Euro cheque for his efforts.
Hunterville-based Katey (21) a junior shepherd at Otiwhiti Station, was ranked best female competitor overall.
The pair were accompanied to France by Beef + Lamb New Zealand Farmer Council national chair, Martin Coup.
Beef + Lamb New Zealand hosted the inaugural World Young Shepherds Challenge in 2011. The competition aims to foster professional development in the next generation of sheep farmers, build strong relationships between the sheep production sectors in each of the countries, and showcase the talent and careers in the sector.
