Although the trend for national guest nights continued to rise in August, below the national level the picture was mixed, Statistics New Zealand said today.

"Both main islands continue to show a rising trend for guest nights," business indicators manager Neil Kelly said. "However, international guest nights are falling, and three of the four accommodation types are flat."

In August 2014 (after removing seasonal variation):

• New Zealand guest nights were flat, following a 1.3 percent rise in July.

• North Island guest nights rose 2.3 percent, and South Island guest nights fell 4.1 percent.

• Domestic guest nights rose 0.4 percent, and international guest nights fell 2.3 percent.

• Guest nights rose for backpacker accommodation, but fell for motels, hotels, and holiday parks.

Unadjusted national guest nights for August 2014 were 3.3 percent higher than in August 2013.

The Accommodation Survey records the number of guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday parks in New Zealand each month.
