Gewürztraminer tops International Wine Competition

Gewürztraminer tops International Wine Competition for second year running

A Gewürztraminer has taken out the top spot in the International Wine Competition for the second year in a row. Lawson’s Dry Hills Gewürztraminer 2013 was awarded the Supreme Champion Wine in Show Trophy during judging on 10 and 11 October. The competition which has been running for twelve years is hosted by the Canterbury A&P Association in conjunction with the Canterbury A&P Show.

Barbara Lawson founded Lawson’s Dry Hills in 1992 with her late husband Ross after growing grapes on their vineyard since 1980. Their first vintage included the Gewürztraminer grown on the winery vineyard on Alabama Road and was just fifteen tonnes of grapes. Other plantings soon followed and the company now produces a range of Marlborough wines and is run by Barbara and General Manager Sion Barnsley.

Chairman of Judges Terry Copeland was impressed by the quality of wines entered, and in particular the Gewurztraminer class as a whole.

“The Competition has seen the highest quality of wines entered since the competition began 12 years ago. Thirty one gold medals were awarded and the number of varieties represented in this list is the most comprehensive in the competition’s history. Nine different grape varieties won gold medals, and the Gewurztraminer class was simply outstanding, with the Wine of the Show coming from this noble variety.”

“It was very gratifying that wines from an array of vintages won prestigious medals. The trophy winning Sauvignon Blanc was from the 2012 vintage and an absolute stunning wine. It shows the winemaking industry is maturing and it’s not all about fresh punchy wines and a desire to sell them through as quickly as possible. The overall quality of wines and some great vintages for aromatic varieties over the past few seasons have combined well which is fantastic for the consumer to enjoy this summer.”

“Riesling as usual was a standout with two trophies and four distinct styles emerged with Gold Medals. Dry, medium, dessert sweet, and the flinty Australian styles all showed well. In terms of fruit purity and elegant fragrant wines to drink in the summer evenings, these wines should convert a whole new generation of wine lovers.”

The Avenues International Aromatic Wine Competition is open to all Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Viognier and other wine varieties including Muscat, Verdeldo, Arneis and Sauvignon Gris, made in an aromatic style from any internationally recognised region.

Judges awarded seven section trophies and 290 medals including 31 gold medals, 88 silver and 173 bronze medals from 369 entries. All section trophy winners competed for the title of Supreme Champion Wine in Show.

Terry Copeland led a panel of experience judges for the rigorous testing process. Judges included Sam Kim (wine writer), Kate Radburnd (CJ Pask Wines), Jim Harre (New Zealand Wine Grower), Petter Evans (Sherwood Estate), Olly Masters (Misha’s Vineyard and Tripwire Wine Consulting) and Jane Boyle (Wine consultant, judging panellist Cuisine magazine).

Judges also judged wine from the entrants of the inaugural Riedel New Zealand Young Winemaker of the Year Competition. Nine young winemakers entered from throughout New Zealand and the winner will be announced during the Canterbury A&P Show.

All medal winning wines will be on display at the 2014 Canterbury A&P Show in the Food & Wine NZ Pavilion. The Canterbury A&P Show will be held Wednesday 12 to Friday 14 November at Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch. It is the largest A&P Show in the country attracting over 100,000 people, close to 7000 livestock and feature competition entries and 500+ trade exhibitors.
