Skilled job vacancies grew in September

Online vacancies for skilled jobs increased by 0.6 per cent in September 2014 and were up by 10.1 per cent for the year, according to the latest Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Jobs Online report.

The monthly growth in online vacancies was shared across most industry groups. Overall, the information technology industry had the largest monthly rise of 1.7 per cent, closely followed by construction and engineering, which was up 1.6 per cent.

The number of vacancies for skilled jobs grew in all regions across New Zealand during the year. The biggest annual increases were in the Otago/Southland (up 23.8 per cent), Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough/West Coast (up 21.4 per cent), and Gisborne/Hawke’s Bay (up 13.0 per cent) regions.

The Ministry’s Labour Market and Business Performance Manager David Paterson says skilled vacancies in Canterbury also continued to increase, driven by growth in the construction and engineering, and hospitality and tourism industries.
