Corban honoured by Institute of Directors

Local businessman Brian Corban was made a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Directors yesterday, in a presentation at The Northern Club.

The Institute of Directors’ highest accolade, the award recognises Corban’s long and successful career, contribution to the IoD, and service to the community.

Institute of Directors CEO Dr William Whittaker says, “Brian has made an outstanding contribution to New Zealand - not only in business, but across the public and community sectors as well.”

“His commitment to ethical business and good stewardship of the companies he leads make him a role model for others in the profession.”

Corban has served on the boards of a number of New Zealand’s most prominent organisations, including Genesis Energy, Auckland DHB, the Railways Corporation, and the Ports of Auckland. As deputy chair of the Broadcasting Corporation, he oversaw the restructure of broadcasting in the late-eighties and the creation of TVNZ as a state-owned enterprise.

Serving the community is a cornerstone of Corban’s practice as a director, and his family links to the West Auckland community are evident in his positions as chair of the Corban Estate Arts Centre and West Auckland Trust Services, and trustee for the West Auckland Hospice Trust.

Corban lists serving as a member of the Waitangi Tribunal between 1993 and 2006 as one of the most important experiences of his career.

He says, “It was one of the greatest experiences of my life; to have an opportunity to serve with some great leaders, both Maori and Pakeha. I got enormous satisfaction out of that work, trying to remedy the wrongs of the past.”

Corban’s Distinguished Fellowship is the latest in a string of accolades, including a Queen’s Service Order for services to broadcasting and being made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the community.

Prominent Auckland director Denham Shale has also been named a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Directors, and will receive his award next month.
