Last Days for Waikato-Tainui Vote

Last Days for Waikato-Tainui Vote

Decision time is nearing for a change to the way in which one of New Zealand’s largest iwi organisations is governed.

Waikato-Tainui is currently running a referendum to identify the governance and representation structure that is preferred by its members.

Voting closes at midday on Wednesday 29 October 2014. Members have just days to cast their vote.

Voting is online at www.waikatotainui.com.

Nanaia Mahuta, co-Chair of the Waikato-Tainui Governance and Representation Review Sponsor Group, says the referendum marks an exciting time for the tribe as it sets its expectations for good governance.

“This is the single most important kaupapa for the tribe since the 2008 settlement of the Waikato River claim. It is all about setting in place an updated governance structure that has amongst its priorities a strong focus on building our skills and capability so that we can drive social development outcomes and economic success,” said Ms Mahuta.

The review of the structure is the first since 1998 and the two model options aim to address the key concerns of members.

“Clarification of roles and responsibilities at the governance level, the continuation of marae-based representation, tikanga-led issues resolution, sound governance, effective decision making, a focus on developing and enabling leadership, skill-based appointments and accountability are themes which have come through from consultation,” she said.

“The models offer members a choice between a step change and remaining with the status quo but with fundamental enhancements. Their views will help determine a final decision and I urge them to make sure they vote.”

The vote is indicative and results will be provided to the tribe’s governing authority, Te Kauhanganui, which is due to make a final decision in November 2014.

Following the decision an implementation plan will commence. Adoption of a new structure will begin following the triennial tribal elections in February 2015.
