Award-winning boutique Gisborne winery for sale

Well-known Gisborne business Kirkpatrick Estate Winery located on the famous Patutahi Plateau, 12 minutes from Gisborne city has been placed on the market for sale.

The boutique winery is one of very few in the region to combine a winery and vineyard on site, allowing it to produce high quality estate-grown award winning wines.

After 10 years of enjoying a rewarding lifestyle, owner Simon Kirkpatrick has the opportunity to pursue a new career in consultancy, and has placed the winery on the market.

“After achieving my goals and dreams in the New Zealand wine industry during the past decade, the time is right for me to move on and allow a new owner to take over and realize their own vision for the winery,” he said.

The property has been placed on the market for sale through Bayleys Gisborne salespeople Tony Rasmussen and Simon Bousfield. It comprises of the land and buildings, winery plant, equipment and the option to purchase wine in vats and barrels, as well as unlabelled bottled wine.

“This is an opportunity for an investor to take over a successful business that is currently harvesting 5.49 ha of top quality grapes across six varieties and turning it into award-winning wines. Additional income streams are from the cellar door, VIP database, wine tours and venue hire. ” said Mr Rasmussen.

“A new owner could step in and take over the existing vineyard and winery straight away with all the early season work done. This is the perfect opportunity for someone with a passion for wine and winemaking.”

The 8-hectare property is located at 569 Wharekopae Road. Simon grew up on his family’s farm across the road from the vineyard site. During university holidays he worked at the winery and dreamt of one day owning it.

His chance came when it went on the market in 2003, and after securing the property he founded Kirkpatrick Estate Winery. He developed the potential of the property and it now boasts 46 medals from the last 10 vintages. These include GIs borne Wine Awards, Wine state Magazine and Liquor land Top 100, Cuisine Magazine, and Braga to, Air NZ Wine Awards, NZ Royal Easter Show, and NZ International Wine Show.

The vineyard and winery have been accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand for its environmentally-friendly policies and practices.

The vineyard area currently planted is 5.40 hectares and is comprised of 34% merlot, 37% chardonnay, 3% malbec, 14% gewürztraminer, 11% viognier and 1% cabernet sauvignon.

Mr Rasmussen said, “Kirkpatrick Estate Winery’s unique vineyard site offers exciting potential for fruit quality and diversity”.

“This is maximised to produce intricate and complex wines that reflect the land and the brand’s focus on quality,” he said.

“Excellent viticulture management and quality focus allow for specific areas to be utilised for specific wines. There are four distinct elevations, terraces and soil types, which develop distinct flavours and ripeness.”

The cellar door faces north and overlooks the Malbec vineyard and out to the hills bordering the Patutahi Plateau. From here, customers can have wine tastings, enjoy platters and take tours through the winery and vineyard. It is also popular for group events such as birthdays, corporate lunches, and special occasions. In addition the vineyard can be booked as a wedding venue.

Cellar stock of all varieties is available and to enable a smooth transition Mr Kirkpatrick is willing to offer some initial consultancy if required to assist the new owner.

Within the winery there is the cellar door, office, wine laboratory and a workshop where the plant and machinery such as the tractor used in the vineyard is maintained.

The four-bedroom home is situated on an elevated site with a large sunny terrace that has expansive views over Poverty Bay toward Young Nick Head.

Mature park-like grounds feature many established trees and also includes olives, a stone fruit orchard, a large productive avocado tree, and a vegetable garden.

Kirkpatrick Estate Winery will be attending the upcoming Gisborne A&P Show on October 17 and 18, where everyone is welcome to taste their wines. On October 25 October the winery will be opening all of their wines from the last 10 vintages to celebrate their 10th anniversary, for everyone to try. This is a prelude to the Gisborne Food and Wine Festival the next day, which they will also attend.
