Vector Network: wild spring weather continues to cause havoc

Vector Network News - wild spring weather continues to cause havoc

Network Summary for week ending 16 November 2014

ELECTRICITY
Auckland was hit by bad weather on Saturday, with high winds and rain causing a power outage to more than 18,000 homes.

The outage happened shortly after 5.20pm on Saturday at the substation in the East Auckland suburb of St Johns. It also affected parts of Mt Wellington, Ellerslie, Remuera, Mission Bay, Glendowie and Panmure. Initial investigations suggest that the outage was weather related. Customers were progressively restored throughout the evening with the final 1500 customers in Orakei restored by 9.27pm.

And the annual Taste of Auckland festival at Western Springs was forced to close early on Saturday because of severe wind gusts.

Fires across the city continued to keep Vector crews busy. For safety, power was isolated to seven house/building fires in Hillcrest, St Heliers, Flat Bush, Mt Roskill, Takapuna, Mangere and Forrest Hill.

Car v pole incidents occurred in Manukau, Mt Albert, Mt Roskill, Parau, Waiheke, Te Atatu and Remuera. In Manukau, the car hit a Council streetlight. Our crews made the site safe and repairs were referred to the Council. It was a Chorus pole in Remuera that was affected in the Remuera incident.

GAS
A smell of gas was reported by a member of the public in Mt Albert. It was discovered that contractors had struck a gas pipe. Repairs were made quickly. Meanwhile, in Greenlane, a contractor struck a gas pipe and repairs were made quickly.
