Localist challenges Tall Poppy knockers this Summer

Localist challenges Tall Poppy knockers this Summer

Auckland, 27 November 2014 - A passionate New Zealand business has today laid down a challenge to fellow Kiwis to stop knocking those doing well and start being their biggest fans this Summer.

The campaign launched today - Hunt For NZ's Number One Fan - supports local businesses by encouraging Kiwis to shout out on a powerful public digital platform when they find someone in New Zealand doing something extra well.

It's the vision of Localist, the country's most popular personal recommendations website, a place where Kiwis and visitors can share what they discover so that others can enjoy those places too.

"We call it ‘giving a love’," says Localist General Manager Christina Sayers Wickstead. "A love is a personal recommendation. It's essentially patting someone doing well on the back in a place where they will benefit from your positive feedback. It's a win win - they get the great feedback, over 500,000 visitors a month get to see that recommendation and you feel great for supporting someone doing well.”

But this Summer there is even more to win. In an Anti-Tall Poppy Challenge, Localist is offering a prize of A Grand Day Out (Yes, $1000 to spend on a single day out at the places the winner loves!) to the person that recommends and supports New Zealand people and places the most.

“We love this prize because there is more than one winner,” says Sayers Wickstead. “The winner will have immense fun spending $1000 in one day, and at the same time be giving back to those doing well by giving them custom,” says Sayers Wickstead.

The Hunt For NZ's Number One Fan will run through December and January. Localist is encouraging all Kiwis to go to localist.co.nz and see others recommendations and ideas, as well as enter the challenge.

"Digital is a powerful way to amplify the greatest referral of all," says Sayers Wickstead. “Word of mouth.”

Localist is a nationwide Kiwi website and app that helps you discover what's great by finding out what locals know and recommend, and lets you share your finds too. An insider guide to what’s great all over New Zealand, the website attracts over 500,000 users a month.

Localist spearheads the ‘Love Local’ movement in New Zealand - the growing global trend towards returning to good Kiwi values of supporting local communities.

“Share the loves this Summer, help others to thrive and tell us what's great in your area or in other places of New Zealand you enjoy," says Sayers Wickstead. "It could be a cafe or a craft shop, a great tradie or fantastic professional, a beach or a bush walk. Let's just celebrate what's great in New Zealand.

"Tall poppies are out, love local is in!"
