TFE Hotels releases results of nationwide survey on ultimate weekend getaway
Toga Far East Hotels (TFE Hotels) has released results of a nationwide survey, which shows that New Zealanders’ ultimate weekend getaway would involve wining and dining in Melbourne with Sir Peter Jackson.
The survey, which asked more than 1,000 participants the age-old question - if you were to go on holiday with a celebrity, who would you choose and where would you go? - found that of all Kiwi celebrities, most would choose to holiday with Sir Peter (26%), followed by the Flight of the Conchords (14%), Richie McCaw (13%) and controversial TV host Paul Henry (10%) - who beat the likes of Lorde, Eleanor Catton, Karen Walker and Dean Barker.
TFE Hotels released the results in celebration of its 100 years of weekend getaways year-long prize draw, where it has gifted a weekend away every week in 2014, with the ultimate weekend away for a winner and 11 friends at the end of this campaign in 2015.
The survey found that almost six out of ten of us would prefer to spend our time with our chosen celebrity exploring a city and indulging in fine food and wine (57%), while over one quarter would choose to have an adventure. Watching sports such as a rugby test or a tennis open, was only favoured by 11% of respondents.
For a weekend away, a resounding 84% would choose an Australian city as their destination, with Melbourne coming out overwhelmingly on top (41%) followed by Sydney (18%), Perth (12%) and Brisbane (11%). When it comes to local destinations, Wellington is the most preferred location for a weekend getaway, followed by Auckland.
TFE Hotels’ Group Director of Marketing, Emma Fraser said, “A weekend away can do so much to recharge the batteries and New Zealand is spoilt for choice when it comes to great nearby destinations to explore. It is fascinating to see visionary Sir Peter is our top celebrity to travel with. I imagine he would make an entertaining companion.”
The top tip for enjoying a relaxing weekend getaway was perfectly summed up by one respondent’s comments, “Take time to relax. Enjoy the moment. Sleep in and stay up late.”
Making an effort to relax, unwind and chill out was the most popular piece of advice for fellow travellers (35%), followed by the recommendation to enjoy good food and drinks.
To mark the end of the year-long celebration of 100 years of weekends, TFE Hotels will give away an ultimate weekend getaway for one person and 11 friends, valued at $15,000.
“It has been a fabulous year of bringing back the weekend,” said Emma Fraser. “As the Ambassadors of Great Weekends, we have sent our prize winners to fantastic destinations and TFE Hotels all across Australia and New Zealand. Whether you are indulging in a city’s fare or off on an adventure, there is nothing quite like a short escape.”
The survey was carried out in November by Omnibus, and questioned 1,009 New Zealanders online using a nationwide sampling framework. The results were then weighted to Statistics New Zealand census gender, age and location data.
