Guest nights rise in October

National guest nights for October 2014 were 7.3 percent higher than in October 2013, Statistics New Zealand said today. This is the seventh consecutive month of rises.

"Otago, which includes Queenstown, was the main contributor to the national increase in October," business indicators manager Neil Kelly said. "Eleven of the 12 regional areas had increases."

For October 2014, compared with October 2013:
• National guest nights were up 7.3 percent.
• North Island guest nights were up 6.3 percent, and South Island guest nights were up 9.1 percent.
• Domestic guest nights were up 5.1 percent, and international guest nights were up 11.3 percent.
• Guest nights were up for all four accommodation types.

For the year ended October 2014, national guest nights were up 5.5 percent from the previous October year.

After removing seasonal variation, national guest nights rose 0.6 percent in October, following a 1.1 percent rise in September. The trend for national guest nights continued to rise in October.

The Accommodation Survey records the number of guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday parks in New Zealand each month.
