Kiwis happy to snub family this silly season

Hotels.com’s Christmas Travel Tracker reveals most expendable family member this Christmas

16 December, 2014: New research from Hotels.com has revealed nearly one in two (49%) Kiwis would happily give one of their family members a chance to star in their own Home Alone movie, by leaving them behind this Christmas.

The annual Hotels.com Christmas Travel Tracker has found 44% of Kiwis would be happy to snub family this silly season within favour of their pets (5%).

According to the Hotels.com Christmas Travel Tracker, it’s kids who are on the Christmas chopping block, with almost one in eight Kiwis (15%) happy to bump them off the Christmas party invite list compared to only one in ten (10%) looking to leave parents behind.

Luckily, almost half (49%) of all New Zealanders agreed they wouldn’t look to leave any of their family members behind this Christmas – not even that annoying second cousin, Garry.

Katherine Cole, Regional Director ANZ & Singapore for the Hotels.com brand, says: “No matter what family combination you decide on, Hotels.com provides the best accommodation options for families of any size.”

When it comes to travelling in the silly season, over one in 10 Kiwis (11%), are channelling their inner-Scrooge and are going away for Christmas to avoid their bickering families; 11% want to experience Christmas elsewhere, 7% just want to try something new, but more than one in two (57%) say they’re travelling to spend quality time with family.

The research also reveals a third (30%) of New Zealanders have confessed they’re either guilty of re-gifting presents or being tempted to do so! Well over one in 10 (15%) have also admitted to scrimping on Christmas presents for family and friends in order to spoil themselves.

About the research

The Hotels.com Christmas Travel Tracker is a survey of nearly 400 Australians and New Zealanders. The survey was conducted by Pureprofile on behalf of Hotels.com in Australia and New Zealand in November 2014.
