Quality wines rise to the top

Quality wines rise to the top

Mills Reef Winery is celebrating exceptional success in a massive Australasian wine challenge that involved the tasting of 10,000 wines, coming away with three of its wines in the resulting Top 40 Best Buy list.

Organised by Winestate magazine, Australia’s oldest wine publication, the judging was based solely on what each wine delivered, with no reference to origin or price.

The Tauranga-based winery won through to have three wines from its Reserve range included in the prestigious list – Reserve Merlot Malbec 2013, Reserve Syrah 2013 and Reserve Chardonnay 2013.

“That’s a remarkable achievement for Mills Reef,” says chief winemaker Tim Preston. “It’s been an exceptional 2013 vintage for us across the board. It’s staggering to think that our premium, award-winning Elspeth range was not able to be included because it had not yet been bottled.”

Like fellow Mills Reef winemaker Paul Dawick, Tim exhibits a great passion for winemaking. Having that passion reinforced by a skill set that is acknowledged internationally is a significant accolade for the winery.

“Getting three of our wines in the Top 40 is very gratifying,” says Paul. “It’s a huge pat on the back for the whole team and irrefutable proof that Mills Reef produces exceptional wines. That’s unmistakable quality.”

Mills Reef wines are produced principally from grapes grown in the Hawke’s Bay region, especially Gimblett Gravels, handcrafted by its winemaking team in Tauranga, employing 100% sustainable practices from vine to glass.

The winery is firmly established as one of New Zealand's premium labels, with a particular reputation for outstanding Bordeaux varietal reds and Syrah.
