For Release: 8 January 2015

ANZ Bank New Zealand backs ICC Cricket World Cup 2015

ANZ Bank New Zealand is sponsoring the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, it was revealed today by 12-year-old “reporter” Cullen O’Connor at the New Zealand final squad announcement in Christchurch.

Cullen, from Taupo, dreams of being a sports reporter and got the opportunity to make the announcement as part of the “Field Your Dream” programme, which sees ANZ making cricket lovers’ ultimate cricket dreams come true.

Cullen also announced the BLACKCAPS line up for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 via social media and interviewed captain Brendon McCullum, coach Mike Hesson and other BLACKCAPS.

He said the experience was all his dreams coming true at once.

“I can’t believe what I’ve been doing today. It’s been a dream come true. I’m more determined than ever to follow my career dream and become a sports reporter.”

ANZ CEO David Hisco said the company had been supporting cricket in New Zealand for 15 years, from the BLACKCAPS through to cricketing grants for local clubs and schools.

“We have also sponsored previous major events in New Zealand, so with cricket’s most prestigious tournament in our own backyard we wanted to continue backing our team and our country,” Mr Hisco said.

“We want to make this summer of cricket memorable for New Zealand fans, so to add to the tournament we’ll be running the ANZ Field Your Dream programme between now and the end of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

“While the BLACKCAPS will be pursuing the nation’s dream, ANZ will be helping make cricketing dreams come true across the country.

“We’re encouraging people to dream big. Whatever New Zealanders’ cricket dreams are, we’re keen to hear them and hopefully make some of them come true.”

ICC Chief Executive, David Richardson, said: “We welcome ANZ Bank New Zealand as a local partner for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. ANZ already has a very strong association with cricket, especially through their cultural and community activities, and the ICC looks forward to ANZ bringing added life and excitement to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in New Zealand.”

The 11th edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup kicks off in Christchurch on 14 February when co-host New Zealand takes on former champion Sri Lanka. On the same day, at the picturesque Melbourne Cricket Ground, four-time world champion Australia will square-off

against England, which reached the final the last time the event was staged in Australia/New Zealand in 1992.

A total of 49 matches will be played across 14 venues, seven in New Zealand (Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Napier, Nelson and Wellington) and seven in Australia (Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney).

The format of the tournament is the same as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 - two groups of seven sides each, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. All the knock-out stage matches will have reserve days.

Apart from the 10 Full Members, four qualifiers – Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland and the United Arab Emirates – will take part in the tournament.
