Queensland Connection at Karaka

Queensland Connection at Karaka

Prominent Melbourne trainer Peter Moody may well end up with a new stable acquisition despite missing out on buying the youngster during the first day of the select session at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale Series.

Moody was the underbidder on Lot 560, a Thorn Park colt from the draft of Hawkes Bay based Lime Country Thoroughbreds, who went to the successful $200,000 bid of Queensland couple Linda and Graham Huddy. The Huddy’s currently have an I Am Invincible and a High Chaparral colt with Moody and were a little perplexed when they found out they had been in competition with their trainer.

“I couldn’t believe it when they told me it was Peter we were up against,” exclaimed Linda Huddy after she signed for the colt.

“He’s probably going to get him anyway so I wish he’d said something as it could have been a cheaper exercise.”

The semi-retired couple who sold their mining contract business back in 2008 are well known for racing the classy galloper Shoot Out who won five times at Group One level including the 2010 Australian Derby. The Huddy’s familiar maroon and gold striped colours also feature on the 2014 VRC Derby winner Preferment who they race as part of a syndicate with ex-pat kiwi trainer Chris Waller.

Linda Huddy was happy to admit she had a little inside knowledge about the colt having seen his development while visiting his home base before the sale.

“We’ve got a broodmare with Jo and Greg at Lime Country so we had seen this colt in the build-up to the sale and we liked what we saw,” she said.

“He was the one we were keen to buy although we have taken shares in a Redwood colt that Peter Moody bought on the second day of the sale.

“This colt will now go back to the Hawkes Bay to develop before we look at where we go with him after that.” – NZ Racing Desk
