Guest nights for December show a continuing rise – Media release

12 February 2015

National guest nights for December 2014 were 7.1 percent higher than in December 2013, Statistics New Zealand said today. This is the ninth consecutive month of rises.

"Canterbury and Otago were the main regions contributing to the national increase in December," business indicators manager Neil Kelly said. "All 12 regional areas had increased guest nights."

Also for December 2014 compared with December 2013:
• North Island guest nights were up 5.2 percent, and South Island guest nights were up 9.9 percent.
• Domestic guest nights were up 5.4 percent, and international guest nights were up 9.5 percent.
• All four accommodation types had higher guest nights.

For the 2014 calendar year, national guest nights were up 5.8 percent from the 2013 year.

After removing seasonal variation, national guest nights rose 0.3 percent in December, compared with November. This follows a 0.9 percent rise in November. The trend for national guest nights continued to rise.

The Accommodation Survey collects data for guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday parks in New Zealand each month.
