Famed Winemaker Comes Home to New Zealand

Famed Winemaker Michael Glover Leaves Australia to Come Home to New Zealand

Nelson, New Zealand, February 25, 2015-Woollaston at Mahana Winery is delighted that Michael Glover, currently winemaker at the celebrated Australian winery Bannockburn, will lead the winemaking team at Woollaston’s Mahana Winery in Nelson/Tasman.

In nearly ten years at Bannockburn, Michael Glover has achieved pre-eminence in the wine world, and is considered one of Australia’s best winemakers by wine writers and wine-lovers alike. In 2011, Britain’s Andrew Jefford rated him as one of the top 12 winemakers in Australia in both Decanter Magazine and the UK’s Financial Times.

“We are delighted to welcome Michael to our team,” said Woollaston at Mahana Director Philip Woollaston. “He grew up near Mahana and understands our soils and climate intimately and his winemaking philosophy is an ideal fit with our natural approach to winemaking from low yielding organic vineyards. We look forward to seeing him take our wines to an even higher level.”

As a teenager, Michael helped his father plant the family vineyard in Upper Moutere, then studied winemaking at Charles Sturt University in NSW. His winemaking experience also extends to France, Germany, and Italy as well as Australia.

“I have always harboured a desire to one day return to the Moutere and make great wine,” Glover commented. “Now, after 20 years, this opportunity is just too alluring to pass up. The chance to work with quality fruit, grown in a manner that fits my ideals of 'terroir' is incredibly exciting.”
