New Ownership Rebrands Old Favourite in the Capital

The secret is out. An old favourite in the Capital has changed hands to Rydges who have won the management contract, adding another strategically located property into the ever-growing New Zealand portfolio run by the publicly-listed, Australasian tourism giant.

Formerly known as the Kingsgate Hotel Wellington, the 108 room, three stars plus property is called ‘The Thorndon Hotel Wellington by Rydges.’ The official roll-out of the brand is on 1 April although as of today guests can make online reservations here.

Catering predominantly towards government, corporate, conference, sporting and leisure groups; the Thorndon’s enviable address offering views spanning the city skyline to the capital’s most historic suburb will continue to be a key strength and revenue driver for the new owners.

“It’s close and convenient to all the action. Whether you have a meeting in the CBD, game to watch at the Westpac Stadium or shopping trip planned for Lambton Quay. We’ve got easy access to it all and only a stone’s throw from the parliamentary precinct too” says General Manager, Mr Jeff Hermes.

“It’s exciting to be taken over by Rydges, such a well-respected operator in the industry. Discussions about future growth plans are presently afoot which can only be fantastic news for our guests.”

The Thorndon Hotel Wellington by Rydges will continue to operate the Glasshouse Restaurant and Bar and offers extensive conferencing facilities that can cater for up to 150 people. Rydges will officially take over the management of the property on 1st April 2015.
