Wholesale trade up in December quarter

6 March 2015

Wholesale trade sales rose in the December 2014 quarter, Statistics New Zealand said today.

Seasonally adjusted total sales rose 0.3 percent, after a 0.6 percent rise in the September 2014 quarter.

“As in the previous quarter, there were mixed results in the wholesaling industries this quarter, with four of the six industries this time having increased sales,” business indicators manager Neil Kelly said.

The industries with the largest sales movements in the December 2014 quarter were:

• other goods wholesaling – up 4.7 percent ($152 million). This industry includes businesses that trade in pharmaceuticals, stationery, furniture, and textiles and clothing materials.

• grocery, liquor, and tobacco product wholesaling – down 1.5 percent ($104 million).

The trend for total wholesale trade sales has generally been rising since the September 2009 quarter.

In actual terms, the value of total wholesale trade sales was $23 billion, up 2.8 percent from the December 2013 quarter.
